“My mom nursed me until the night before my…”

“I have great breastfeeding cheerleaders. My mom nursed me until the night before my second birthday, my 3 sisters-in-law have breastfed 9 kids for at least 150 months combined, my husband has been by my side through 47 months of (combined) breastfeeding, it was just something I was going to do. But I never knew how hard it would be. I needed a nipple shield with both boys and when I realized I needed one with Beckett, I honestly thought about giving up, I knew how hard it was to wean from the shield. So, I stood in the formula aisle of Target and cried. And decided that I wasn’t going down without a fight. With Lincoln I had a “no tears (or crumbs) on the baby” rule; I did not have that rule with Beckett. I was pregnant with Beckett when Lincoln weaned and the hormonal shift led to PPD. With a 2 year old. I didn’t think it worked that way, but it was real. My sister-in-law, Allison, finally put the pieces together and it allowed me to not feel crazy and be gentle with myself. Beckett is weaning, sort of, last week I realized it had been 13 days since he last nursed and that night I offered milk and he nursed for 25 minutes. Maybe that 25 minute session on Wednesday, April 29th, will be the last memorable session he does, maybe he’ll also nurse past 2, but I’m just glad I’ve gotten this much time with my babies to bond and nourish them.”
